Welcome to my new game show! I name an abstract quality or category, and you name objects that instantiate that abstraction. Everyone is a judge, whether they know it or not.

For the first round, we have:

Giving The Sense Through Filmic Storytelling That The World Is Bigger Than The Protagonists And Their Narrative

To get us started, I’ll tentatively name Princess Mononoke.

I nominate A Serious Man

Dazed and Confused

The Fifth Element

I mean it the narrative was about the protagonists saving the world, but only thing to give me a sense of what it must’ve been to watch Star Wars before it was canonized

The Neverending Story

Oh, and all three Neil Bompkamp movies. (District 9, Elysium, and to a lesser degree Chappie.)

Which themselves remind me that their thematic ancestor, Alien, had this in spades.

Azumanga Daioh

…I mean, it’s a very non-central example of the phenomenon under consideration, but even so.  Perhaps especially so.
