Social Coercion Is Actually Good

This is what… Actually, this is what literally everyone believes (with the possible exception of a few, but absolutely not all, Anarchists), isn’t it?

Social coercion is probably the best example of how people love to proclaim universal moral rules that they clearly don’t ACTUALLY view as universal.

“Social” “Coercion” seems to package together a helluva lot right here.

Social pressure is a thing and is going to remain a thing, so we might as well try to use if for good where that is possible and diminish it where it is harmful.

And while we’re at it, how about we dump the tendentious term “coercion”? I think its use will generate more heat than light.

Substantively agreed, though I don’t know that “coercion” is tendentious in this context - otherwise nobody would be explicitly approving it!

Social coercion of what form, with what consequences?

“Play by our rules, or you can’t play in our playground” is a great system so long as those who can’t or won’t play by your rules have some option that doesn’t involve starving / going insane, and so long as there are systems in place to keep your playground from occupying most of the world.
