Demographic transition (n.): the observed/posited phenomenon whereby, as they approach industrialized-first-world levels of wealth and technology, populations start having fewer and fewer children until their fertility rates are at replacement or sub-replacement levels. 

Often cited by futurists as an indication that overpopulation is unlikely to be the doom of the human race.  Often cited by traditionalist conservatives as an indication that something is dreadfully wrong with modernity.
