There’s not really a cultural trope of grieving for the “death” of a person that got erased by extreme personality change, except maybe the fantasy/comics trope where the villain is the protagonist’s former best friend driven mad by demonic forces or whatever, but it’s a not-uncommon feeling about certain exes and ex best friends.
Of all the people that I know that make art Gordon’s probably the one that makes my favorite art. There’s tons of Steinian and Joycean and Marxian and so-on ambitions underlying everything he makes, but honestly the part I care about is that he’s also the Wes Anderson of gibberish, or – less snappy but more dignified – the Bergman-of-Fanny-and-Alexander of gibberish. He has this truly bizarre genius for creating crazed, alien, mangled language-objects that are somehow – I have no clue how – also heartbreakingly serene and delicate and old-world-opulent and staid.
